Looking at the 250 top grossing pictures as Martha Lauzen studies do begs the question - why aren't there more women directors, writers, producers on the top grossing pictures. It is probable that 'top grossing' means high budget, studio-backed, marketing dollars invested pictures.  Defining Talent as ability to carry off that size movie or defining talent as the ability to  deliver movies that earn relative to their budgets.....both these possibillities need to be parsed. Is it a matter of women "IN" the system saying women can do it as well as insisting that smaller films are legitimate films.

Damn it I'm sick of this issue. "They" don't want us, don't know us and don't respect what we want to say. I'd venture to say that Tom McCarthy doesn't want to do a blockbuster but if he did, they'd ask him. That 'ask' doesn't get made to a woman who's made a The Visitor-like movie. It's the gender not the kind of movie!!!
