From Phylis Geller: ANSWER: for a television documentary, if you're doing it on spec without a broadcaster involved up front, aim for an hour length. Commercial (cable) hour is about 44:00; PBS is about 53:00, before credits and all the other on-air material.
It's much much harder to sell anyone a 90 min or two-hour piece. And stand-alone half-hours are hardly ever picked up, unless someone has a series (like SUNDANCE's GREEN BLOCK) where it might fit.
