The International Committee Presents NYWIFT @ The Brooklyn International Film Festival
Short Films and Reception

For the third year, the International Committee of New York Women in Film & Television and the Brooklyn International Film Festival are happy to invite you to celebrate a slate of exciting and provocative short films by women filmmakers from around the world. After the screening, come and join us to meet and greet the filmmakers. The eleventh edition of the BIFF runs from May 30 to June 8, 2008. The mission of this international, competitive festival is to discover, expose, and promote independent filmmakers, while drawing worldwide attention to the borough of Brooklyn. NYWIFT members will receive the discounted price for the entire run of the festival.

FLYING LESSON by Rosane Chamecki, Andrea Lerner and Phil Harder, 5 min., 2007,USA
Dreaming requires practice.- Flying Lesson is a sweet sail one foot above Brooklyn, conceived and performed by Rosane Chamecki and Andrea Lerner, known for their fantasy and raw movement.

Rosane Chamecki and Andrea Lerner are natives of Curitiba, Brazil. They moved to New York in 1989 and founded their dance company Chameckilerner in 1993. Since then they have created numerous critically acclaimed choreographies that were presented in New York and toured around the world. In 2007, they premiered Exit at the Kitchen in New York. This piece was a good-bye to their dance career. Flying Lesson is their first attempt at making films and a collaboration with award winning filmmaker and cinematographer Phil Harder.

Philip Harder has directed more than 200 music videos, numerous short films, and commercial projects. He has earned several top distinctions including an MVPA award for Best Alternative Video, MTV Awards video nomination, an AICP Video, SXSW short film award, and a nomination for MVPA's Director of the Year. Flying Lesson won the jury prize at the 2008 Dance on Camera Film Festival at Lincoln Center, New York. The team is now in pre-production of their next project The Collection.


KARAOKE by Carolina Hellsg?rd, 15 min, 2008, Germany
Karaoke is the story of Liselotte, an elderly actress looking for a new role in theater or film. In a series of scenes we follow her as she visits different casting-sessions. Without significant success, she interacts with the people around her. Liselotte's only hope remains her old friend Vera, to whom she has not spoken to for years.

Carolina Hellsg?rd was born 1977 in Stockholm. After finishing her studies in film history at the Stockholm University, she attended the experimental film program at the Berlin University of Arts. She has written and directed the shorts Thicker Than Water (2004), Thirst (2006), and Karaoke (2008).


FIRST by Tinge Krishnan, 6 min., 2007, UK
Sophie, a teenager with learning difficulties, is a talented pianist. When her best friend Danko enters her into a prestigious composer competition she discovers that the world is not quite ready for her unorthodox musical style.

Tinge Krishnan has directed a number of award winning shorts such as Random Nights, Groove On A Stanley Knife and the 2001 BAFTA winning short Shadowscan. She is in pre-production on her first feature, Junkhearts, written by Simon Frank and produced by Karen Katz, and is in post-production on the short Honey And Razorblades shot on location in Thailand.


WALNUT by Amy Gebhardt, 11 min, 2007, Australia
A lifelong bond between a teenage boy and his dog is coming to an end. Bottled up, the boy's grief becomes a wall that sits between him and the people he loves. Staying strong can be hard, especially when you're losing your best friend.

Amy Gebhardt has become an award winning writer/director/cinematographer in both drama and documentary. In 2007 she graduated with a Masters in Directing from the Australian Film, Television and Radio school.


LA CORONA by Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega, 40 min, 2007, USA
This is a beauty pageant like no other, and it happens every year in the Women's Penitentiary in Bogot?, Colombia. La Corona was nominated for an Academy Award in the short documentary section. It will air on Cinemax this fall.

Amanda Micheli is an award-winning filmmaker with more than a decade of experience as both a director/producer and a cinematographer. Her first film, Just for the Ride, won a student Academy Award and an IDA student award and premiered on PBS's P.O.V. in 1996. Her second film, Double Dare, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Audience Award for best documentary at the AFI Film Festival.

Isabel Vega got her start as an editor, assistant director, and associate producer on documentary projects for HBO, Lifetime, Bravo, and FX as well as numerous national commercials. In 2005, Vega's short film First Kiss premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. She coproduced the second-season premiere episode of Morgan Spurlock's 30 Days and was an associate producer on Thin, which premiered at Sundance in 2006, as well as HBO's global-warming documentary, Too Hot To Not Handle. Currently, Vega is codirecting the documentary series I Can Change The World with Academy Award-winner Maryann De Leo.
